津軽三味線奏者の友達から
「津軽三味線の上駒の下にあるくぼみはなんなんだろう」
と質問されたことがあります。
これにはまずさわりの構造から説明しなくてはなりません。
I was once asked by a frined of mine who is a tsugaru-shamisen player,
"What is the dent under the upper bridge of tsugaru-shamisen for?"
I have to explain about the mechanizm of sawari at first.
さわりとは三味線の一の糸だけ上駒から外し、上駒のくぼみの頂点にかすかに当てることによって「ビヨーン」という琵琶のような余韻がでる（琵琶にはすべての音にこの機構がついているそう）機構のこと。
Sawari is a mechanizm of making buzzing sound pourposely to put the
first string off the upper bridge of shamisen,
and the touch the string to top of the dent and then
we can get the buzzing sound like biwa.(Biwa has this mechanizm in all strings.)
「三味線の美学と芸大邦楽科誕生秘話」によると
1560年あたりに三味線が本土に伝来して、
寛永前後（1624年あたり、江戸時代の家光の時代）
につけられた機構らしい。
（すなわち伝来当初にはついていなかった）
Shamisen came into the Japanese mainland around 1560,
and about 70 years later,
the mechanism was introduced(the first time shamisen was introduced,
there was no mechanism like that.)
チューナーなどで見ると一の糸の音が安定しなかったり、
さまざまな倍音が含まれたりと西洋音楽で言ういわゆる
「雑音」に美を感じるのが歪んだ茶わんに美を見いだす
「不完全なものに美を感じる」（茶の本跋文千宗旦氏の言葉）
意識に通じて実に面白い。
When we tune by tuner, the pitch of a sound of first string is unstable,
and it has various harmonics hightone.
It's interesting that we like the sound ,which is taken as noise
in western music.It's also lead to the spirits of tea ceremony
that we feel the beauty in incomplete things.
前置きが長くなりましたが
津軽三味線にはほとんと全て吾妻（あづま）ざわり
（東さわりとも書く）
というネジ式の機構がついており、さわりがつけやすくなっています。
これは津軽三味線は津軽民謡の伴奏楽器であり、唄い手さんによって
音の高さを高くしたりするのでさわりがつきにくい、という理由で
説明されます。
Most of the tsugaru-shamisen has the aduma-sawari which uses screw
so we can get the buzzing sound easily.
The reason is the tsugaru-shamisen is the accompaniment for
folk song in tsugaru-area,so we tune shamisen with each singer's voice pitch,
so we find it hard to get buzzing sound by sawari.

The person who promote this mechanizm in tsugaru-shamisen is the
fouder of oyamaryu, oayama mituo.
この吾妻さわりがあることによって
一の糸を上駒からはずす必要がなくなり、
したがって上駒の下のくぼみも必要なくなったのだがまだ形としてまだ残っている、という話。
We don't need to put the first string off the upper bridge of
shamisen by this mechanizm, so
there is no need for this dent, but it still remain as the shape.
地歌の三味線やってた頃は「押しざわり」
という言葉があって、糸蔵に指をつっこみ糸を押して、糸をつぶすことによってさわりの溝の角に糸を当てるテクニックや
天神部分をひねってサワリを調整したり、
サワリの下に小さな和紙を入れてサワリを調整したりするテクニックがありましたが、
津軽三味線だけ弾いてる若い人は意外に知らない話だったりするのです(^^ゞ
そういえば上駒のところで糸が切れる「高切れ」という言葉も、
ほとんどナイロンを使う津軽三味線では聞かない言葉ですね。
